Carving A Life From Stone


    Art is a diverse range of human activities in creating visual, auditory or performing artifacts (artworks), expressing the author’s imaginative or technical skill, intended to be appreciated for their beauty or emotional power. The word “Genius” and “Versatile” getting to very few persons in the world. But, some of them got appreciation, awards and fame. But some artists do not get any of them.

    The oldest forms of art are visual arts, which include creation of images or objects in fields including painting, sculpture, printmaking, photography, and other visual things. You must have heard about M.F. Hussain? He is the “King of the Arts”. Here, in this article we wouldn’t be talking about M. F. Hussain ,but would be introducing a person who has got the talent and is a genius but nobody would know him.  He is an artist who engraves pictures on “Marble” and “Granite” slabs.

    He started this work 20 years ago. He never studied drawing from any institution like the children study art nowadays. He engraves the pictures on  “Marble” and “Black Granite” slabs. As a child he would engrave letters, growing up he started engraving pictures.

    He engraves pictures staying  home. He has field work also. He engraves the pictures using a small needle like tool. He gets many orders for engraving the pictures.

    The minimum cost of one picture to engrave is Rs.4000. When it comes of deities he charges Rs.20, 000. When the work is not so big  it takes him just two days to finish. When it is big , he takes 3-4 days to complete.

    He gets the Black Granite and Marble slabs from granite and marble dealers. He buys fine quality Black Granite slabs for engraving the pictures. Most of his pictures are engraved on Black Granite slabs. If the picture is small, he engraves on Marble slabs. He first draws the picture in the Black Granite slab and then only starts the engraving work .

    He has a lot of happy and satisfied customers, this can be seen from the amount of work he gets. His earning is quite sufficient for his family. His family is very supportive, so he is happy and satisfied with this work.

    Not all artists become great like M.F. Hussain , but there is a lot of art amidst us that is never recognized.  Art does need appreciation and support, but there are a few souls who do it for the love of the art. This is one such person. He might not be famous , but when someone from around his place see an engraving , he is the one that they think of.
